Halnaker Hill Natural Capital partners with Earthly to offer Voluntary Biodiversity Credits for sale

Halnaker Hill Natural Capital (HHNC) has announced a partnership with Earthly that makes Voluntary Biodiversity Credits from Halnaker Hill Farm available for sale through its marketplace.

The agreement comes after the project, near Chichester, Sussex – one of the largest BNG schemes of its kind in the UK – passed Earthly’s Keystone 3.0 assessment. This evaluates progress and potential across 168 indicators, including carbon, biodiversity and people, with a level of scrutiny that is driving quality in the market. Fewer than 9% of projects pass the assessment.

Voluntary Biodiversity Credits can be purchased by anyone with an entry price below £100 per credit. Halnaker Hill Farm together with Earthly will be looking to help corporates interested in meeting their sustainability goals through nature recovery and individuals looking to personally invest in enhancing the natural environment.

Greg Lukasiewicz, Sales & Marketing Director at Halnaker Hill Natural Capital, said: “We are proud to have received Earthly’s stamp of approval and our new partnership underlines the impact we have made at Halnaker Hill Farm since we acquired the site in 2024, and its ability to provide organisations and individuals with a responsible way to invest in biodiversity and the fight against climate change, while setting a new benchmark for sustainable, regenerative farming.

“We are looking forward to working with Earthly to make high-integrity BNG and biodiversity credits accessible to those seeking a credible investment in nature with long-term environmental impact.”

Halnaker Hill Farm is owned by HHNC, with commercial aspects managed by Kingsbridge, a leading developer of commercial projects across the south. Before it was acquired by HHNC in 2024, the land had been farmed for wheat since the 1970s.

The landmark scheme will see 330 acres returned to their natural condition of centuries ago, with a rich mosaic of wildlife habitats including hedgerows, grassland, ponds, woodland and wildflower meadows. Cattle, sheep and pigs are being reintroduced to the farm as part of its natural land management. The project provides more than 850 biodiversity units, registered with the South Downs National Park Authority and Natural England, for developers, corporates and individuals, and is one of the largest single BNG land banks in England.

A Section 106 agreement between Halnaker Hill Natural Capital and the South Downs National Park Authority provides legally secured 30-year stewardship.

Earthly's Voluntary biodiversity credits use DEFRA BNG assessed parcels of land, fractionalised into 9x9m squares. This means the monitoring, verification and management of the land is done to the highest standard, but the price point is accessible in a way that enables businesses to create bespoke nature portfolios at any investment level.

Oliver Bolton, CEO and co-founder of Earthly, said: “We are genuinely excited to bring this project to Earthly's marketplace. Halnaker Hill is the kind of project that reminds you why nature restoration matters, and why doing it well is both harder and more valuable than it looks.

"Businesses supporting voluntary biodiversity credits are addressing climate and nature risk – increasingly in demand by boards and investors – and enabling ecosystem services from the restored landscape to improve flood risk, air quality, biodiversity and local economies.

“The team at Halnaker Hill Natural Capital and Kingsbridge are paying down ecological debt methodically, hectare by hectare, guided by science and backed by legal certainty.”
