Our vision for nature recovery

Our Vision

The vision for the farm is to restore the land to its full potential to create a sustainable farming model that produces organic food, enhances biodiversity, and captures carbon to combat climate change.

Already, the farm has planted 6km of native hedgerows and 7 hectares of native woodlands, mostly deciduous broadleaf species that will connect 2 ancient woodlands and create habitats for wildlife.

Through regenerative farming, the farm aims to revive techniques that prioritise soil health and nature conservation.

We are hoping to pledge our land into the Weald to Waves program which is…

‘Establishing a nature recovery corridor from the High Weald to the Sussex coast and revived seas, encompassing over 20,000 hectares of contiguous habitat’

Dew Ponds

We have created three dew ponds which used to be a key feature of the Downland landscape providing a vital source of water for wildlife.

40 hectares of the land will become new calcareous grassland and has been sown with a bespoke and biodiverse wildflower mix containing large quantities of rare and important species.

Scrub

9 hectares of the farm is dedicated for scrub which is often a forgotten habitat or seen as an ‘eyesore’ so is destroyed, however it is hugely important, providing a food source all year round as well as protection from weather and predators, ground nesting birds particularly rely on this habitat.

A Herbal Ley at Halnaker Hill Farm

Herbal Ley

54 hectares of a biodiverse herbal ley mix which will be ‘mob grazed’ by a small herd of Sussex cattle, regenerating soil health and producing organic, year-round wild pasture grazed beef.

Woodland and hedgerows

Woodland

The farm has re-planted miles of dense species rich native hedgerow, restored species rich grassland and planted additional deciduous woodland to create ‘bigger, better, more joined up’ habitat between the existing woods on the Goodwood Estate and Selhurst Park (the neighbouring farms).

The farm will contribute to the South Downs National Park target of ReNaturing 30% of the South Downs by 2030.
